BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Chicago Owner’s Guide
BFT gate motor replacement in Chicago typically runs $680-$1,450 installed, depending on swing versus slide configuration and whether the control board needs swapping too. We stock BFT-compatible motors for the Ares, Phobos, and Deimos series on our trucks, and most replacements in Lincoln Park, Oak Park, and the North Shore are completed in a single visit. Most homeowners realize their BFT motor is failing when the gate starts reversing for no reason, or when it simply hums and refuses to move on cold February mornings.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT organizes its residential and light-commercial gate motors into clear series lines, and matching the correct replacement means reading the data plate carefully. The Ares series covers single and dual swing gates up to roughly 16 feet per leaf, with the Ares 1000 and Ares 1500 being the most common units we see in Chicago’s older brick bungalow neighborhoods. The Phobos line handles heavier swing applications, while the Deimos series covers sliding gates, including the Deimos BT A400 and A600 models popular on narrower city lots where a swing gate would block the sidewalk.
Every BFT motor carries a rectangular data plate on the non-drive side of the housing. You’ll need the model number, production date code, and amperage rating. The gotcha most owners miss: BFT revised its mounting footprint around 2017, so a Deimos BT A600 from 2015 will not bolt directly to a 2019 replacement without a retrofit bracket. We carry both patterns on the truck. For OEM versus quality aftermarket, we generally recommend OEM BFT motors for gates with integrated loop detectors or keypad interlocks, since aftermarket units sometimes drop the auxiliary 24V output that powers those accessories. On a standalone swing gate with no extras, a quality aftermarket equivalent from our supplier saves roughly $180 and carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise.
Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- The gate hums but won’t budge, especially below 20°F. BFT motors use a capacitor-start induction design, and after eight to twelve Chicago winters the start capacitor loses its microfarad rating. The motor draws current but cannot generate enough locked-rotor torque to break the gate free from ice or stiff hinges.
- Intermittent reversing mid-travel. This usually traces to worn encoder brushes inside the motor housing. The control board loses position feedback, assumes an obstruction, and reverses. In Wicker Park we see this often on gates with heavy iron scrollwork that has settled slightly off-plumb, adding extra load.
- Slower operation over time, particularly on the closing stroke. The gearbox grease hardens with age and cold cycles. BFT uses a worm-drive gearbox that is sealed for life, so there is no fill port. Once the grease turns to paste, the motor strains against itself and overheats.
- Visible oil or grease weeping from the motor base. The output shaft seal has failed. Water then enters the gearbox, and in Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles that water cracks the aluminum housing from the inside. We caught one in Rogers Park where the housing had split completely in half.
- Control board throws error code E5 or E8 repeatedly after reset. These codes indicate overcurrent or thermal shutdown. Sometimes the board is at fault, but more often the motor is drawing excessive amps due to internal shorting in the windings. We test with a clamp meter to separate motor from board before quoting either.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Component | Typical Range (Chicago) |
|---|---|
| BFT swing motor (Ares 1000/1500), installed | $680 - $950 |
| BFT heavy swing motor (Phobos), installed | $890 - $1,180 |
| BFT slide motor (Deimos BT A400/A600), installed | $820 - $1,150 |
| Control board replacement (if needed) | $240 - $380 additional |
| Retrofit bracket (pre-2017 footprint) | $85 - $120 additional |
What drives the range: slide motors cost more than swing due to the rack-and-pinion assembly; heavy iron gates in Kenwood and Hyde Park need the Phobos torque rating; and some installations require extending conduit or replacing a rotted junction box. We settle the full price before touching a bolt. Every motor replacement includes alignment verification, limit setting, safety sensor testing, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. No paperwork to file. If it is not right, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?
There is a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can verify the model number, check the breaker, and confirm the manual release works. Beyond that, BFT motors weigh 35 to 55 pounds and mount with the gate in a partially open position. The 120V feed must be locked out, the limit switches recalibrated with a multimeter, and the force settings adjusted to UL 325 standards so the gate does not injure someone. We have seen two DIY attempts in Chicago end with stripped gearbox housings because the motor was bolted down under tension. If the gate is giving you trouble, tell me what it is doing and I will tell you what it needs. Call (844) 321-0766 and a live person will pick up, 24 hours a day.
FAQs
Twelve to fifteen years is typical here, though we have replaced Ares units at nine years in lakefront neighborhoods where salt spray accelerates corrosion, and seen others reach eighteen years in inland Oak Park with annual grease-and-inspect maintenance. The $89 seasonal tune-up we offer catches most of what shortens that lifespan. Call (844) 321-0766 to schedule.
Sometimes. A failed external capacitor or a loose terminal block is worth fixing. But the sealed gearbox, the encoder assembly, and the stator windings are not field-repairable at a cost that makes sense. We test first, and if repair is practical we will say so. Estimates are free.
Most BFT motor swaps take two to three hours from arrival to final testing. If we need a retrofit bracket or the control board is questionable, we carry both possibilities and finish same day rather than reschedule. We will be there when we say.
We stock BFT-compatible motors, brackets, and control boards on our service trucks. Not every independent gate company in Chicago carries BFT specifically; we do, because enough homeowners in this city have them that we made the investment. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with BFT.
