Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate hangs lower on the latch side than it did last season. Hinge pin weld joints fatigue gradually in Chicago’s climate, and a 1/8-inch drop becomes a half-inch by spring. The underlying cause is usually crystallization at the heat-affected zone of the original factory weld, accelerated by road salt spray and thermal shock.
• The Linear opener motor hums but the gate barely moves, or reverses immediately. This often traces to a cracked motor mounting plate that lets the operator shift under load, throwing off the limit-switch geometry. The motor is fine; the metal it bolts to is not.
• You see orange rust streaks below any welded joint, especially at the bottom hinge. Rust bleeding through paint means moisture has reached bare steel inside the weldment. In Chicago, this typically starts where the weld bead meets the parent metal, the spot least protected by factory coatings.

A homeowner can safely check a few things. Verify the gate moves freely in manual release mode. Look for fresh cracks in paint at weld joints. Measure sag with a level or string line. These checks tell you whether the problem is geometry, not the operator.

What we do not recommend: attempting to weld gate hinges or motor mounts yourself. Gate hinges carry hundreds of pounds of dynamic load, and a cold weld or wrong rod choice will fail without warning.
