DoorKing Welding & Fabrication: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

DoorKing welding and fabrication repairs in Chicago typically run $340-$780 installed, depending on gate size and material thickness, and we stock the common DoorKing hinge sets, receiver posts, and strike brackets on our trucks for same-day completion. Most homeowners discover the problem when their gate starts sagging on the catch side, drags concrete, or the operator strains and reverses because the frame is out of square.

We see this most often on older DoorKing 1601 and 9100 series swing gates installed in the 1990s and early 2000s around Oak Park and the North Shore, where freeze-thaw cycles have worked the original welds loose. The gate still moves, barely, but the motor is doing work the frame should be doing. If the gate is giving you trouble, tell me what it is doing and I will tell you what it needs.

Which DoorKing Models This Applies To

DoorKing has used three distinct hinge and receiver geometries across their residential and light-commercial lines. The 1601 series (through 2004) used a 3/4-inch pin with a 2-1/2 inch barrel spacing that differs from the post-2004 spec by a quarter inch, enough that a mismatched hinge set will bind in the first season. The 9100 estate series carries a heavier 1-inch pin and a cast receiver bracket that cracks rather than bends, which is your clue: a cracked receiver means the gate frame itself has racked and needs welding, not just a bolt-on replacement.

The current 1602 and 1603 series standardized on the 3/4-inch pin with 2-3/4 inch spacing, and DoorKing’s own replacement hinges (part 2600-010) are still available. We also carry aftermarket equivalents from Elite and Linear that match the spec at roughly two-thirds the cost, though we default to OEM on any gate still under warranty. To identify your series, check the operator housing label or the casting number on the hinge barrel itself, usually visible once the gate is cracked open to 45 degrees.

Signs Your DoorKing Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate hangs lower on the latch side than the hinge side. This usually means the top hinge barrel has wallowed out or the weld between the hinge plate and gate frame has cracked. On DoorKing 1601 gates in Chicago, we see this accelerate after salt-heavy winters because the original mild-steel hinge plates corrode from the inside.
  • The operator motor hums longer before the gate moves, or stalls entirely. A racked frame creates binding friction that the motor was never sized for. DoorKing’s 1/2 HP residential operators are designed for smooth swing geometry; even a half-inch of sag can double the effective load.
  • The gate scrapes or bangs against the stop post or receiver. This is often a twisted frame rather than a simple hinge failure. The receiver post may look straight, but if the gate frame has racked, the striker misses the catch by an inch or more and the owner finds themselves shouldering the gate closed.
  • Visible cracks at the weld between the vertical stile and horizontal rail. These start hairline-thin and propagate fast in Illinois weather. Once a crack opens, water freezes in it, the gap widens, and the gate goes from repairable to replacement-candidate in a single hard winter.
  • The keypad or remote triggers the operator, but the gate moves unevenly or reverses. DoorKing’s obstruction logic is sensitive to current draw spikes. A binding hinge or racked frame can fool the board into thinking it hit a car, when the real problem is mechanical resistance.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Chicago
Hinge set replacement (both hinges, pins, bushings) $340-$480
Receiver post / strike bracket replacement $280-$420
Frame welding and square-up (on-site) $520-$780
Full hinge + receiver + weld restoration $780-$1,150

What drives the range: material thickness (14-gauge residential vs. 11-gauge estate gates), whether we can weld in place or must remove the gate to the shop, and how far the frame has racked before we catch it. Every quote is itemized before we strike an arc. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the labor and any parts we supply, written and with no paperwork to chase down. Senior and veteran customers receive 5% off, and repairs over $250 qualify for $50 off.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing a homeowner can safely check: with the operator disconnected, lift the gate manually and feel for binding or grittiness in the hinge arc. If it does not swing freely through 90 degrees, something is wrong mechanically. But do not attempt to adjust or replace hinges with the gate under its own weight, and never try to weld a loaded gate frame. The spring tension in a sagging gate can shift suddenly, and molten metal on galvanized steel releases zinc fumes that are hazardous without proper ventilation and respirator equipment.

Welding out-of-square frames back to true requires a diagonal pull or hydraulic spreader, then tacking, then checking square before final welding. We carry porta-power kits and magnetic squares on every truck because this is not a guess-and-hope repair. Call (844) 321-0766 and we will quote it upfront, arrive when we say, and handle the heavy work.
