Which BFT Models This Applies To

The Q.BO keypad series, including the Q.BO WiFi and Q.BO Premium, uses a different mounting footprint than the older Radix keypads. The intercom side breaks into the BFT LYNX audio units and the newer B-Evo video intercom systems. The critical detail is the control board protocol: Q.BO units after 2019 switched to the U-Link platform, and a keypad meant for the older BFT Clonix system will not handshake correctly even if the wires match up.

To identify yours, look for the white BFT label inside the keypad housing or on the intercom backplate. The part number starts with letters that tell us the generation. Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Keypad buttons stop registering presses, especially after rain. The membrane beneath the buttons cracks with freeze-thaw cycles, and Chicago’s March temperature swings push moisture through the seal faster than in milder climates. Water ingress corrodes the contact pad underneath.
• Intercom produces static or drops audio mid-conversation. This usually traces to a failing microphone element or moisture in the speaker housing. On BFT LYNX units, the microphone gasket hardens after about four to five Chicago winters and loses its seal.
• Gate opens with the remote but not the keypad code. The keypad receiver board is likely losing power intermittently, or the code memory has corrupted. We see this on Radix units after voltage spikes from summer storms.
• Backlit display flickers or goes dark. The LED driver circuit fails, or the ribbon cable fatigues at the hinge point where the keypad cover opens. On Q.BO Premium units, this cable is replaceable separately.
• Intercom camera shows a washed-out or tilted image. The CMOS sensor degrades from UV exposure, or the mounting bracket shifts from gate vibration. B-Evo cameras with auto-iris circuits fail more often on west-facing gates with afternoon sun exposure.

There is safe checking, and there is work that belongs to someone who knows where the voltage sits. You can verify that the keypad display lights up, that the intercom breaker has not tripped, and whether the issue follows rain. Do not open the keypad housing to probe wires: BFT control boards send 24V AC to the keypad on some models, and the intercom line carries low voltage but shares conduit with the gate motor’s high-current feed in many Chicago installations. Misidentified wires have damaged control boards that cost far more than the service call.
